perhaps I should have prefaced this with a statement about how much I love odd-ball instruments, Gibsons in particular.

All you need now is to get a Corvus or two..

I doubt the 25 guys that would buy one would be enough to ofset the cost of tooling up to build it--
So I guess I am saying "why waste the time and money developing something nobody will buy"
You do know that if 25 guys in a guitar forum with...what...250 members...will equal to around 2,500 in real world.
There are tons...tons...and tons of gibson players who doesnt even own a PC or go on guitar forums.

Actually I'd love a Covus. I saw one while on vacation this spring in England. Pricing was reasonable, condition was good. If I had the cash, and gumption to deal with importing back home I'd have had it. it was the first one I had seen in person.
I suspect it will be one of those guitars that "got away". I'll bore my friends with the tale at length. no one understands. god bless the internet and guitar forumns.

Ron,
Don't be so hasty. If there is sufficient interest, i.e.,potential dollars to be made, then they'll make it. Besides, who knows if the interest shown on this forum is all that is needed to overcome corporate inertia for this project? I know I want one.

a shame. I bet they could totally sell 1000 of them at street $2500 a pop almost immediately.

There IS sufficient interest. Almost all of the people who got my Moderne book said they would be very interested in buying a re-issue if it ever happens. That's well over 1000 people.
So figure a reasonable price assumption of 3k per instrument=300k.
That's not too shabby a figure.
I wonder how sale figures would compare to the Eye, the Zoot, the reverse Explorer, all those GOW's,etc.

Ron,
Your arithmetic is of by one order of magnitude. $3,000/ unit X 1,000 units equals $3,000,000. I'm assuming that the $3,000/unit is price to the consumer. I don't know what Gibson's mark-up is, but I have to figure that they still would come out well over $1,000,000 in revenue assuming 1,000 units sold.

I'm still in for one as long as the price isn't $3k. It may cheapen the legacy but a faded mahogany model would be right up my ally.
BTW Ron is your book still available? I had no idea it was published.

Ron would you be so kind as to share the full title and ISBN of your book so I can find it and order it.
Second, helloooo Gibson, since many guitar builders don't hit 1,000 instruments a year in total, please reissue the Moderne, faded Mahogany or Limba (Korina) if you prefer, gold hardware and the original Moderne headstock. I regret to say that I know myself enough to say if you build it, I will buy one. I will trust the other 999 to step up.

Just because a Moderne has not surfaced, does not mean it's isn't out there. I can think of a few reasons why the owner would wish to remain anonymous.
Gibson employees who worked there at the time have said a Moderne was built:
Ted McCarty said one more than one occasion a Moderne was made.
Juluis Bellson said the Korina models were displayed at a show in Germany in 1957.
John Huis also said the Moderne existed.
A couple of other workers from that period have also told me the Moderne existed.
It's very possible that the orignal Moderne was Mahogany.
could've been...

I've been thinking about this for a while now...
besides the fact that there may be limited interest in the Moderne(remember, the Epiphone run at the time sold poorly), if Gibson did decide to do a run, finding defect free Limba in production quantity AND especially quality might prove difficult. That is the only reason I see why they haven't done the (long overdue) reissue.
We can still hope huh?
