In light of Gibson's latest email discussing the recovery of the Gibson USA factory, http://www.gibson.co...24/Default.aspx, I noticed an incredible swirl of paint on the floor in one of the pictures. Perhaps a limited run of Les Paul's, LP Junior's, Melody Makers, SG's, etc., in a "Driftwood Finish" to remember the recovery of the Gibson Factory?

I was thinking that was leftover from somebody working on one of those zoot-suit SGs - an image of which I've been trying to get out of mind since the first time I saw it.

I would see Gibson doing something like that. It would be great if part of the proceeds would go to benefit musicians that lost their axes. I think it could be a pretty cool finish on a guitar.

If you are going to make dumb comments like that, you should at least qualify it with the note that it is your opinion and only your opinion. It is a different finish, maybe one that a lot of people do not like. However, some do like it.

Um...you state "if you are going to make dumb comments like that"...you forgot to "qualify it with the note that it is your opinion and only your opinion."

Okay then...I stand by my opinion...in accordance to the First Amendment to the United States Constitution...and my right of free speech to express that the swirled paint Les Paul is a pretty fugly guitar...IMO...it's not my "cup of tea"...and as for those that "do like it"...I can recommend a great eye doctor...ha ha ha...

I was commenting on the guitar finish itself...not the unknown "artist"...I have no idea who/what Captain Tightpants is referring to when he states "Way to disrespect a pretty good guy."

The posts in this forum are supposed to offer constructive opinions and requests directed to Henry and Gibson to take into consideration to offer customers what they want and don't want to see in production guitar models and merchandise...not to slag fellow forum members...

I've seen uglier sunburst finishes on factory guitars, myself.

To each his own.

BTW--the guy that owns that is a really cool dude, and counts his blessings that he can own a Gibson.

So lighten up Francis.

I am not the only one who has addressed the issue with you. I did not "slag" you, I only made an informed response to your "post".

My initial post simply stated...

"Paint swirl Les Paul...???...yuck...Driftwood Les Paul...???...cool..."

To which you replied "If you are going to make dumb comments like that..."

By adding the adjective "dumb" to the noun "comments"...your statement becomes a contumelious(look it up) and calumniatory(again...look it up) remark...IMO...

I chose the pics at random from Google's image search to demonstrate what the original poster's idea of a "paint swirl" and "driftwood" finish might look like if it were both accepted and implemented by the powers that be at Gibson...and now that they are posted Henry et al can get a better idea of the concept and interject with a thumbs up or thumbs down...

I have no idea who the anonymous artist is...nor do I care...I'm just providing a visual aid that is freely and publicly available to the entire world on the internet...but I can glean from the perceived animosity of this thread...that the artist is familiar to a few people here...what are the odds of that...???...

All the great masters have their detractors...Da Vinci...Picasso...Van Gogh...in the art world..."everyone's a critic"...so try not to take things too personally...

I bought an Ibanez (don't recall the model now) for about "5 minutes" twenty years ago or so that looked a lot like the swirl Les Paul shown above. I recall that the official name of the paint swirl motif on the Ibanez (it was a factory color) was Clown Vomit. I wonder if the painter of the LP was inspired by that old Ibanez offering?

Despite the rants of disrespect to different members of the forum and some LP owner out there, the point is to never forgot the tradegy of the Gibson Factory and all those musicians in Nashville that lost so much. Having some kind of "driftwood" edition would be really cool. Gibson won't reuse any of the damaged materials, but the idea of driftwood is really good. It could show Gibson being enviromentally friendly by using reclaimed woodstock from old planks from barns, buildings, and other sources. I've read where some boutique guitar maker gets wood from Lake Superior in North Michigan that's been underwater for 100 years or more to make the bodies of his guitars because the tone is beyond anything found today.

Here's a vid that shows underwater logging...and explains a bit about how/why the wood is used for guitar making...
