ok.....
next gen robot Firebird? As much as I'd appreciate that, I suspect that would not be worthy of the big announcement.

maybe it's a firebird with 10 pickups?
I have a Flying V, an Explorer, a Moderne, a Reverse V and a Reverse Explorer...so...yeah I'm that guy.

How about an array pickup that fills the entire space between bridge and neck and provides 64 effective pickups? If you are going to think out of the box get OUT of the box.

All kidding aside, it reminds me of the days when cases had cases. Seriously, there'd be a soft case that would go on the outside of the hard case to protect it.

From what I am seeing on the Facebook posts, it is looking the big announcement is about this guitar. It may include a Blue tooth pedal, auto tuning, and some on board processing, but not for sure yet.

I'm 100% certain this won't 'change music forever.'
It may change the gibson.com homepage for 5-7 days.

All kidding aside, I think whatever some tech thing is, it's a neat deal for Gibson.

Here's the reasoning: Even if 80 percent don't last more than a year or two, something is likely to "hit" and become a standard.

What the heck, why not even something so simple as a built-in tuner of some sort? In the olden days of high-end tube radios, many even had a "tuning eye" that gave a visual indication whether you had the strongest possibly signal at a given point on your tuning. Certainly an LED could last a long time on virtually no power drain with standard batteries of some sort.

Sorry to "traditionalists," but honestly, I remember when any electric guitar design was kinda revolutionary. The only potential non-revolutionary guitar design for electric would be add-on pickups on a standard acoustic guitar. Once guitars were purpose-designed to be "electric," it became a different world.

Any techie neatnesses now added to electric guitars that in ways have been unchanged since 1960 are simply a restart of evolution of the instrument.

I can remember, btw, in the 1950s how some pickers wouldn't consider a "board" guitar on grounds that it was worthless without an expensive amplifier.

That's an interesting sorta solidbody there. Three pickups that look like the '50s? A batch of dials and switches, each one of which might have multiple purposes?

Possiblity of a bridge piezo? (Maybe multiple piezo a la Variax?) Looks as if about any solidbody sound could come out of a fairly traditional looking solidbody. Hmmmm... Bluetooth? I dunno, mebbe. Robot? Mebbe. "Revolutionary?" Hmmmm how much computing power? Built in tuner a la AE? Etc/?

Edit: Another thought looking at the pix of HJ again. He looks way, way happy. Then I got thinking. He's an MBA type who likes pickin'. Gets to wear jeans or whatever most of the time. Gets to mess with guitar gear like he's still 18 even when he's being "the boss."

Heck, I'd smile like a Cheshire cat too. Yeah, I'm a tad jealous. He made the point he could have sold after he did the turnaround but - y'know I wonder if it wasn't just too much fun and too rewarding, at least when folks don't get on his case in a nasty personal way? You can't take "it" with you, but having a smile most of your life just might be worth more than a couple extra bucks.

Anyone else out there just think the Firebird X looks cheap and/or out of place? I love Firebirds (been thinking of pulling the trigger on a sweet Pelham Blue Firebird V w/Maestro lately in fact), but I'm not feeling this "X" model. I'd rather personally see some research and development going into how to make existing models of guitars better and more affordable for working-class joes than things such as this.

I WILL say, however, I'm glad to see parts and replacement power-chargers, etc. becoming available for all those robot guitars and whatnot. At least there's a little aftermarket support there where originally there wasn't.

OK, Henry: here's the perfect SG reissue recipe (I KNOW you can pull it off if you WANT to): Historic spec nice deep beveling paired with the '61 RI's more period-accurate thinner tapered horn tips (and leave a little more on that bottom horn length to give it that true "vintage" semi-symmetrical illusion!); or bring back the Maestro Vibrola as an option on the USA '61 Reissue (along with the 1999-2003 consistent deeper bevels, which as of mid 2010 seem to be creeping back onto the '61 RI). And make either or both (whichever you do) of them nice "new" deep cherry red (not "washed" or "faded", and with good filler to avoid sinkage/shrinkage & don't skimp on the clearcoat...let's see some nice mirror-perfect finishes like those originals!). Leave the slabby halfhearted-reissues to the copycat companies overseas and start taking pride in REAL LOOKING REISSUES for us at home. Then I'm a customer again and will sing the praises of the "Big G" again!

So what was the big December 11th revelation? It's the 21'st and I haven't heard anything new.

Dec 11th was supposed to be the launch/release date, but apparently the FTX ended up becoming self-aware, realized how ugly/complicated/expensive it really was, and decided to commit robo-cide?
