My favorite picks over the years have been silver coins, ala Billy Gibbons' Peso or Brian May's sixpence. They're hard to find now and kind of expensive (not to mention hard on strings). I tried Ice Pix and a couple of other metal composition picks, but they're not the same. I make do with the more pedestrian Tortex blue or Cool mediums.

I use bog standard Medium picks from one of the local stores (Steve's). I've tried all sorts. early on I played super thick Tortex picks, but as I got used to it, Steve's meds became my go to pick. thins just tear on me amost right away, and I find that thicker than this don't have enough play for the feel I look for. something about the type of plastic used in these just feels right to me and wears right. after about 10 hours they are too worn and I move to another one, but I grab a handful every time I'm in the shop, so I usually have a bunch handy, and I always keep one in my wallet, just in case.
I have a Flying V, an Explorer, a Moderne, a Reverse V and a Reverse Explorer...so...yeah I'm that guy.

Anyone familiar with the Red Bear Trading Company guitar picks that are similar to tortoise shell picks? I use Jazz III picks but I'm also interested in trying other types too.

Also where do you get the bone picks from?

Thanks for the link. They have a lot of nice picks. Some I'm really interested in. But, sorry, I'm not paying $23.00 for a shot in the dark for one pick.

Bone Picks? Found them at All Parts. Probably a lot of other suppliers. Try this link:

I've been playing jazz since the sixties and have tried a lot of picks. I really like the "Cow Hoof" picks from All Parts. Don't laugh. They are a stiff pick and each one has a contour. From the baggie you get, you'll find three or four that conforms to your thumb and index finger. They have a nice soft feel and sound. For $15.00 you should try them. Link here:

Thanks for your reply Randy, sorry I've been busy and haven't had time to post a thank you. I may try some of those cow hoof picks for $15. You are right, it's plenty of "moo-la" (no pun intended :P ) for the Red Bear picks, so it may be the cow hooves for me.... ^_^

Some pros I know are using the stone. I'm using the Dunlop Gator 2.0's for a while, until my arthritis gives up or my therapy takes hold. Idea is to make the pick do more of the work, so hand lasts longer. MMWV.
Where's my TONE?

My choice is the Jazz style Tortex in green. It has revolutionized my playing, allowing more harmonics and dynamic control. Suddenly I'm able to do things I never knew I had the ability to do!
