I am curious about the Gibson logo. Who designed it, and what was the idea behind it? It is one of the many great company logos out there and would be cool to get some history on it's designer & design.

Which one? There have been at least 4 different designs over the life of the company.

The first one being "The Gibson", then there's the pre-war/cursive style, "Golden-era" (similar to current), the Norlin-era (ridiculously bad looking), and the current design, which is actually pretty much the same as it was in the '50s...give or take a few very minor details. I prefer that one the best. B)

The current angled Gibson logo. It has a one piece design with negative space. It would neat to find out who designed it.

I tried to get similar answers about their Custom Diamond logo but no one ever responded. I am honestly getting more and more frustrated, concerned and disloyal as they keep on ignoring everyone here and not meeting any of their promises.

Not that most of us don't care (I don't really) but why isn't the Firebird X on the market yet? Lets get it out there and over with. Stop giving us crap that you are enhancing it more and more because of newly discovered technology. Where are the 50th Anniversary monthly SGs that were promised? So many things falling through with this company; I am expecting to hear it has gone out of business or has been purchased by Ibanez or something.

It is too bad this company isn't publicly traded because then at least the shareholders could do something to help this situation.

The "modern" Gibson logo made its debut ca.1947, it was designed to reflect the change in management after CMI gained a controlling interest in Gibson in 1944. Unfortunately, we don't have much information regarding the identities of who actually designed many of the logos and designs used by Gibson over the years.

Neat! Thanks for the reply. It's a good logo design. Let see if we can get how the split-diamond inlay was created, lol. Who decided on the shapes of the trapezoids and diamonds?

No details as to who came up with the split diamond inlay, but it was originally designed for the Super 400 ca.1934 when Guy Hart was President of the company. I don't have a copy of the Super 4oo announcement brochure, but here is the '36 catalog page.

Interesting how it's remained the shape of choice for the high end models for so many years. Cool article, too!

Thanks for that info. After seeing the picture you kinda see why the design was created. It is a nice compliment to those fret inlays for sure.
