I would love to get a VOS 1957 Les Paul. One problem: the neck is too large and uncomfortable for my small arthritic hand. Sure, I could buy a ’59 with the smaller neck which fits my hand perfectly but, I’m not prepared to shell out an extra $2000.00 just to get a different neck profile. After all, it doesn’t cost any more to produce different specs. It’s all the same to the CNC machine. I know many players who are of the same opinion. There are many of use who still buy guitars to play, not collect. So, exact vintage specs are of little interest to us. I don’t see why Gibson can’t offer more player-friendly features on the custom shop instruments. Why not offer the ’56 & ’57 LP models with a slimmer ’59 neck? Why not offer the ’59 with the larger neck for those that prefer that profile? I think you can see where I’m going with this.
The VOS guitars have been in the line-up now for several years. I think those who believe they actually somehow got an original have bought one by now. It’s time to add some fresh ideas to these instruments while maintaining the cosmetic appearance that is distinct to each model.

Sgt,
We actually offer an assortment related to your post. Might want to consider:
1. 1960 LP Custom Black Beauty - Historic LP Custom, with a 1960 (Slim Taper) neck. This neck is slimmer than the 57 neck, flatter on the back and more of a D shape. Gibson's 1960 neck was the first "skinny" neck
2. Les Paul Custom - More modern specs with a "50's" style neck, a similar contour to the 50's Historic (C shaped), but not as stout. A staple on our Les Paul Standard's, Studio's, etc. for years. This could be quoted with a Mahogany top replacing the Maple top, giving a rounded 50's Custom tone without the edge that the Maple top adds
Send me an email if you want more help with this, Custom should be able to meet your needs here.
Thanks,
Vic

Vic,
I think you've missed my point completely. If I wanted a Les Paul Custom or a LP with a 60's neck, I'd get one. If the Les Paul Traditional or 2008 Standard were finished in the authentic 50s tint of gold, I'd get one. If the VOS '59 wasn't so much more money just for a flame top, I'd get one. Bottom line: I want something that looks exactly like a '57 or 56 goldtop with a more comfortable neck.
